In a heavyweight battle between two Italian giants in midweek, Inter Milan and Roma will turn their attention back to Coppa Italia duties when they meet at the San Siro on Tuesday night.
Inter Milan
Starting with the hosts, coming off the back on an action-packed defeat at the hands of their bitter rivals AC over the weekend, there is no doubt that Inter Milan will be seeking an immediate boost here. Eventually hit with a 2-1 defeat at the San Siro a few days ago, Head Coach Simone Inzaghi finds his side now holding just a one-point buffer at the top of the Serie A table. However, with their sights firmly set on reclaiming their domestic crown this season, the Nerazzurri have gained plenty of plaudits since bringing in the one-time Lazio boss. In fact, Saturday s defeat in the Milan derby was the first domestic defeat that Tuesday s hosts have suffered since October 16th. Looking to lay down another marker in midweek, Inter should also be boosted by their most recent meeting against their fellow Italian heavyweights. When the two sides faced off at the Stadio Olimpico back in December, Inzaghi s men picked up a thumping 3-0 win.
Team News
January arrival Robin Gosens is still out with an injury issue and will not make his debut here.
Likewise, Inter Milan are expected to be without both Joaquin Correa and Felipe Caicedo at the San Siro.
As for the visitors, while Roma might have found a much-needed boost when heading into January s brief winter break, Jose Mourinho s men are coming off the back of a toothless display on home soil. Having a last-gasp winner controversially ruled out at the Stadio Olimpico, the former Inter Milan boss had to see his side settle for a 0-0 stalemate against leading relegation scrappers Genoa. Watching last month s three-match winning run come to an abrupt end, the Giallorossi will know that they face another stern test here. Still in an uphill battle to clinch another European finish this season, Tuesday s guests will be calling on a red-hot Tammy Abraham to spearhead their charge in Milan. Continuing to impress since making a big-money move from Premier League giants Chelsea last summer, the England international has racked up 10 Serie A goals so far this season. However, it should be noted, Mourinho s new squad have failed to win any of their last nine straight meetings against the defending Italian champions, a run that goes back to 2017.
Team News
Despite being shown a late red card against Genoa over the weekend, Nicolo Zaniolo will be able to feature here as his ban only applies to Serie A fixtures.
Former Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho does have a full squad to chose from here.
